Ruby Hemsley has the developmental disorder Williams Syndrome and has had three major heart surgeries at LGI - two as a baby and open heart surgery in 2018.

She has intestinal failure and relies on a Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) machine to keep her alive.

Ruby's face lit up with joy as she joined her Middleton street, and thousands of others across Leeds, in clapping to thank the NHS last night.

Communities joined together for the mass round of applause and Leeds Town Hall and Leeds Corn Exchange were lit up blue in honour of frontline healthcare heroes.

Ruby's mum Danielle Hedley, 35, said: "It was so emotional, watching the video back makes me want to cry.

"The video says it all, you can see in her face how excited she is to hear the whole street clapping.

"Ruby spent seven months in LGI last year after open heart surgery and the NHS is literally keeping her alive.

"My child wouldn't be here without them, in more ways than one."

Ruby has a high risk of sepsis and as a vulnerable person she is required to stay at home for at least 12 weeks during the coronavirus crisis.

Danielle has cancelled all carers coming into the home, taking on the full weight of Ruby's care.

She has urged people to follow lockdown rules and stay at home, to protect the lives of people like Ruby.

The mum-of-four said: "My anxiety is through the roof and I just want people to stay at home - let's get rid of this virus. It could literally take Ruby's life.

"I don't think people will realise how serious this is until it becomes local, until they know someone who is poorly.

"But I've been in that situation where my child could have died, I know what it feels like and it's awful.

"Please, stay at home."
