The lasers will light up the skies above Leeds General Infirmary and St James' Hospital from 8pm - just as the nation breaks into its weekly round of applause in support of health and key workers.

It is a gesture organised by the Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust to say thank you to to health and care staff, key workers and the public who have been working hard during the coronavirus outbreak.

The lights, which have been paid for by the Trust’s charity, Leeds Cares, will tomorrow beam up from 8 – 11pm.

Blue lights will be beamed across Leeds skies tonight to say thank you to frontline workers who are working hard in the coronavirus crisis.

They will be above the the Jubilee Wing at Leeds General Infirmary and at St James’s Hospital.

Tim Field, the Trust’s Senior Estates Manager, said: "We feel strongly that this is a celebration of everyone – our own health staff, all carers, all key workers and the wider Leeds public who have supported our hospitals by isolating during this current emergency.

"The blue beams will tie in with the 8pm public applause and provide a spectacular backdrop to that event.

"Thanks to Leeds Cares and those who support our charity for helping to make this happen."

Esther Wakeman, Chief Executive of Leeds Cares, said the charity is proud to support the ‘Clap for Carers’ initiative.

Ms Wakeman said: "It’s been heart-warming to see people across the nation clapping each week to support NHS staff.

"We wanted to light up Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s Hospital in blue to honour all the amazing NHS staff who are working hard to care for patients and families during this unprecedented time.

"We would also like to thank everyone who has contributed to our Support Your NHS Hospitals campaign to assist our wonderful hospital staff and patients."

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is also using the blue lighting so that people can show their appreciation during the “Clap for Carers” by watching the lights from afar and not congregating on its hospital sites.

Next Thursday, May 7 a set of the lights will appear at Chapel Allerton Hospital.

On Thursday, May 14 they will be at Wharfedale Hospital.

This is why blue lights will be seen across Leeds skies tonight
