The Yorkshire postcodes with the highest proportion of deaths from Covid-19

The government has released data showing how many deaths in each postcode area of England were attributed to Covid-19.

The ONS statistics show the number of deaths from any cause per postcode between March and June, the number certified as being caused by Covid-10, and the coronavirus figures as a percentage of the total number.

In the largest cities of Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield and Hull, there are some neighbourhoods where over half of recorded deaths were directly caused by coronavirus, and in some places, more than 60 per cent were.

However, there are still some lucky postcodes which have had no coronavirus deaths at all during the epidemic.

Barnsley

The former mining town has been badly hit by coronavirus, with an outbreak at a meat processing factory in Wombwell in which several workers died receiving media coverage.

Wombwell South is the worst-affected postcode, with 24 deaths from coronavirus in four months. That's out of a total of 57 deaths from all causes - or 42.1 per cent.

Seven other postcodes have recorded a proportion of deaths from Covid-19 at over 30 per cent - Royston West; Royston East and Carlton; Shafton and Upper Cudworth; Mapplewell and Staincross; Thurnscoe; Wosbrough Common and Bolton-upon-Dearne. Mapplewell and Staincross had 23 coronavirus deaths out of an overall total of 76.

Bradford

The city includes one postcode with one of the highest death rates in Yorkshire - the inner suburb of Manningham and Lister Park. Eighteen residents have died from coronavirus - but with only 34 deaths in total, that means Covid-19 has been responsible for 52.9 per cent of them.

The affluent spa town of Ilkley and the nearby village of Ben Rhydding, which have large elderly populations, have lost 28 people, with 32.2 per cent of the deaths in the March - June period caused by Covid-19.

Bingley Town has had 26 coronavirus deaths, out of 70 overall - a proportion of over 30 per cent.

Great Horton and Brackenhill also has a proportionate death rate of 52 per cent - 21 people have died from Covid-19 out of a total of 40.

Saltaire and Baildon West have lost 20 people to the virus, Crossflatts and Eldwich 16, Undercliffe 15, and Fairweather Green 19. The proportionate rate for Chellow Heights is a high 42.9 per cent, but this equates to nine Covid-19 deaths from 21 recorded.

Calderdale

The postcode of Illingworth and Ogden has recorded zero deaths until June.

Calderdale has not suffered as badly as some neighbouring towns and cities. No area has had more than the nine deaths recorded in Savile Park, which was 27 per cent of the total of 33 from all causes.

Craven

Rural Craven is one of the most sparsely populated areas of Yorkshire. Sutton and Crosshills, on the outskirts of Keighley, recorded 19 deaths out of 73 that were attributed to Covid-19 - 26 per cent of the total. There were 13 deaths in Skipton South, 37 per cent of the total figure.

Doncaster

Covid-19 deaths in Doncaster are concentrated in its former pit villages. The only area with a proportion of Covid-19 deaths higher than 25 per cent not to have links to mining is the Hexthorpe and Balby North postcode, with 15 deaths.

Thorne, a mining town, had 21 deaths from a total of 77 - 27 per cent.

Askern, Campsall and Norton; Carcroft; Hatfield East; Mexborough East and New Rossington all had proportionate rates of over 25 per cent.

East Riding

There are some surprisingly high death rates in the mostly rural East Riding, although the area does have an elderly population.

Bridlington West has had 13 deaths, 28 per cent of its total of 46. Bridlington East and Flamborough lost 10 residents out of 40 to the virus.

In the villages of Stamford Bridge and Sutton on Derwent, there were 33 deaths in the period, nine from coronavirus - or 27 per cent.

The villages of Burton Agnes, Rudston and Langtoft lost 10 people to Covid-19 out of 39 to die, around a quarter of its deaths.

The affluent villages of Walkington, Bishop Burton and Woodmansey, near Beverley, lost 15 residents. In Hedon and Preston, the 21 Covid-19 deaths were 44 per cent of the postcode's total.

There were 20 deaths in Hessle West, on the outskirts of Hull, and 12 in Snaith.

Goole East and Skipsea, Roeford and Brandesburton had zero coronavirus deaths.

Hambleton

A rural district at the northern end of the county. There were 15 deaths in Northallerton South and Leeming Bar from the virus, but only small numbers elsewhere.

Harrogate

Harrogate's elderly population has suffered badly in the epidemic. In Starbeck, 29 people died from Covid-19, 37 per cent of the total number of deaths.

There were 26 deaths in Harrogate Central - a proportion of 40 per cent - and 17 in Knaresborough North, out of a total of 41.

Other hotspots were Spofforth, Burn Bridge and Huby (14 deaths); Hookstone (13); Harrogate East (10); and Boroughbridge and Marton-cum-Grafton (14).

Hull

There are significant variations in Hull. Kingswood has a proportionate death rate of 50 per cent - 15 of the 30 residents to die between March and June had Covid-19.

In Bransholme West, seven of the 21 deaths were from the virus, and in Bricknell East, 13 out of 34. Newlands Avenues had just 12 deaths in the period, but four were from coronavirus - 33 per cent.

There were 18 deaths in Greatfield and 15 in Newington, which had a proportionate rate of 40 per cent. In Chanterlands Avenue, there were seven coronavirus deaths out of 23.

Sculcoates, however, recorded zero.

Kirklees

Media coverage in Kirklees has focused on outbreaks at meat processing plant in Cleckheaton and a bed factory in Batley.

In Dewsbury, Savile Town and Thornhill Lees have a proportionate death rate of 44 per cent, having lost 11 residents out of 25 overall deaths.

Scholes and Hunsworth have had 17 deaths from Covid-19, and nine people in Upper Batley and Soothill - out of 30 - died from the virus.

In Dewsbury Central and Westborough, there were 13 coronavirus deaths out of 35. Meltham in Huddersfield lost 15 people to coronavirus - nearly 40 per cent of its total death rate.

Yet no deaths have been recorded in Dewsbury Moor Lower and Westtown.

Leeds

Leeds' figures reflect its urban density and diverse population. In the Roundhay Park and Slaid Hill neighbourhood - where there are several care homes for the elderly - 60.6 per cent of deaths were due to coronavirus. Twenty residents died with the virus out of a total of 33.

In affluent Moortown, there have been 17 coronavirus deaths. Six of the 15 deaths in Roundhay West were due to Covid-19.

Seacroft East and Monkswood, a deprived area, has been badly hit. There have been 25 deaths - a proportionate rate of 46 per cent.

New Pudsey has recorded 14 coronavirus deaths and there were 32 in Colton, Austhorpe and Whitkirk.

A high percentage total was also recorded for Robin Hood and Lofthouse - more than half of the deaths were due to coronavirus. Fourteen people in the area have died from Covid-19.

Leeds has a large number of postcodes with more than 30 per cent of deaths being due to coronavirus. The others are: Boston Spa and Bramham; Guiseley North and West; Guiseley East and South; Alwoodley; Lawnswood and Ireland Wood; Horsforth West; Carr Manor; Horsforth East; Chapel Allerton North; Meanwood South and Sugarwell; Headingley; Gipton North; Harehills South; Bramley Park South; Crossgates West and Killingbeck; Pudsey; Wortley; Holbeck; Beeston Hill and Hunslet Moor; Cross Flats Park and Garnets; Churwell; Belle Isle South; Morley North and Gildersome South; Hyde Park Corner and Woodhouse Cliff.

There were no recorded deaths in Swarcliffe or the city centre.

Richmondshire

The upper Dales are not densely populated and have had relatively few cases. However, around the army base at Catterick Garrison there have been more deaths. Sixteen were recorded in Catterick Garrison and Colburn, and 14 in Catterick village and Brompton-by-Swale. At the garrison, this was 40 per cent of the total of 45 deaths.

Rotherham

There have been some acute clusters in Rotherham, and many areas have more than 30 per cent of all deaths attributed to Covid-19. Eleven of the 27 deaths in Swinton South were coronavirus-related - over 40 per cent.

There were 23 deaths in Kimberworth Park and the same number in Wickersley North. Twelve of the 33 deaths in Whiston were from Covid-19. Twenty-one people have died in Dinnington from the virus.

Ryedale

This rural district of North Yorkshire has not recorded large numbers of cases. The population centres of Malton and Kirkbymoorside have had the most deaths.

Ten people have died in Malton and Norton, and five in Kirkbymoorside.

Scarborough

The seaside town has a large number of retirees and some areas have had clusters of deaths. Nineteen people have died from the virus in Ramshill and South Cliff, out of a total of 80. In Scarborough Central, there have been 11 deaths - 33 per cent of the total.

Selby

There have been few concentrations of cases in a largely rural district. Twelve people have died from Covid-19 in Carlton, Hemingbrough and Osgodby - 37 per cent of the overall total.

Sheffield

A a major city, Sheffield has some areas with high death rates.

In Crabtree and Fir Vale, Covid-19 accounted for 66 per cent of the total number of deaths. So far 67 people in this area have died from Covid-19.

In Herdings and Gleadless Valley, the figure is 59 per cent - there have been 16 coronavirus deaths from a total of 27.

Other areas with large numbers of Covid-19 deaths are Chapeltown (20); Firth Park (16); Shirecliffe and Parkwood Springs (21); Burngreave and Grimesthorpe (17); Woodhouse Mill (18); Heeley and Newfield Green (20); Intake (20) and Norton and Norton Lees (18).

Ecclesall and Greystones recorded zero coronavirus deaths.

Wakefield

The city had also experienced high death rates in certain areas.

Castleford has had 16 deaths out of a total of 42 - a proportionate rate of 38 per cent.

In Outwood West, there have been 20 deaths, and 10 out of 31 in Knottingley were caused by Covid-19.

Sixteen people have died in Normanton West and 17 in Wakefield Central. Eastmoor has lost 16 residents to the virus and Streethouse and Sharlston Common 19. Lupset has had 17 deaths from a total of 41. South Elmsall had recorded 19 coronavirus deaths.

York

Only four areas of the city had proportionate death rates of over 30 per cent.
