Everything we know as Leeds residents confirmed among Coronavirus patients

The UK total coronavirus patients climbed to 36 yesterday - including two Leeds residents.

The two new cases were included in a total of 12 new cases reported on Sunday.

The two residents are believed to have been infected in Iran.

Three of the latest cases in England are family members of a man from Surrey who was the first to catch the illness within the UK.

All four are adults, including one more from Surrey and two from West Sussex, and are not GPs or health workers, acting regional director for the south of England for PHE says.

Another new patient, from Essex, had no relevant travel to an affected area, according to Prof Whitty, and it was unclear whether the patient had contracted it "directly or indirectly" from somebody who had recently travelled abroad.

The eight remaining cases include one from Bury, Greater Manchester, who was infected in Italy, two new patients from Hertfordshire and one in London.

Another is from Gloucestershire and is linked to a member of staff at a school in the Cotswolds, identified the day before.

Meanwhile, the first person in Scotland to be diagnosed is a Tayside resident who recently travelled from Italy - the worst-affected country in Europe.

The Prime Minister is to chair an emergency Cobra meeting on coronavirus following a weekend which saw the number of people infected in the UK climb to 36.

Boris Johnson is expected to warn ministers that Covid-19 will present a "significant challenge" to the country as he finalises a new battle plan by the Government.

Scotland declared its first case, while 12 new patients were diagnosed in England on Sunday, when the Health Secretary admitted it was "inevitable" coronavirus would continue to spread.

Matt Hancock would not rule out following China's lead in shutting down cities if the Covid-19 outbreak escalates.

Mr Johnson, who has faced criticism for waiting until Monday to chair a meeting on the deadly virus, is due to lay out contingency plans which could include banning public gatherings.

"The number of coronavirus cases around the world is rising every day - and the UK is no exception," he is set to tell the meeting.

"There now seems little doubt that it will present a significant challenge for our country.

"But we are well prepared, and the Government and the NHS will stop at nothing to fight this virus."

It will be attended by senior ministers as well as chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, as they ratify the Government's proposed countermeasures.

Shadow Health Secretary Jonathon Ashworth says he would support shutting down cities to control the spread of coronavirus.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast on Monday, Mr Ashworth said he wanted clarity from the Government about its next steps to contain the Covid-19 virus.

Asked if he would support shutting down cities to prevent the spread within the UK, Mr Ashworth said: "If the medical advice and the scientific advice is to take measures along those lines, of course we would support them.

He continued: "It would be a move by Government so drastic that we hadn't seen it. And I'm not sure how practical it could be in reality.

"However this virus is serious and appears to spread very easily and we need to contain it and slow down the spread.

"If the medical advice is to do something like that then of course we should support it.

"That is why I am keen, however, that Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary, comes to the House of Commons today after the Cobra meeting to update MPs on plans.

"We just need clarity from Government."
