Fears to be raised over future hospital services

CONCERNS about the future of hospital services for 250,000 people in Yorkshire will be raised at a public meeting.

Local people will hear the latest details about plans for York Hospital bosses to take over the management of the troubled NHS trust which runs hospitals in Scarborough and Bridlington.

NHS chiefs say there is little prospect of the trust achieving elite foundation status as required by the Government and talks are under way for a formal merger.

Leo McGrory, chairman of the Scarborough branch of the Local Improvement Network representing patients, said there had been “good progress” at the trust in the last 12 months.

“We want good-quality local healthcare. The concern is that Scarborough hospital could be run down to be a glorified cottage hospital with all the major work done in York. It’s 80-odd miles there and back on the A64 which can be horrendous,” he said.

Acting trust chief executive Mike Proctor said: “Plans to form an integrated organisation are progressing well.”

The meeting is at Scarborough library tomorrow starting at 6.30pm.
