Leeds to host socially-distanced breastfeeding support groups for world awareness week

A series of social events are to be held in Leeds to mark the start of World Breastfeeding Week as authorities hail the health benefits to both babies and mothers.

While not everybody chooses to breastfeed or is able to, the Leeds is Breastfeeding Friendly campaign is aimed at supporting feeding mothers to feel more confident in public.

Through this week there are to socially-distanced events to create a "safe space" for women from the Leeds Bosom Buddies.

"For women to be able to come together and feed their babies with other local mums depicts what this year’s World Breastfeeding Week is all about," said Teresa Newsome, mother of two and peer supporter for the group.

"Women can walk to their local space to gain well deserved and often critical support and a much needed sense of solidarity.

"As a natural and renewable source of food, breastfeeding really will help us make a healthier planet."

Health leaders in the city have spoken of the health benefits of breastfeeding ahead of the awareness week, and of its environmental impact.

Steph Lawrence, executive director of nursing at Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust said the nation is more aware at the moment of its health and wellbeing, and this week gives an opportunity to recognise the impact breastfeeding can have.

Coun Rebecca Charlwood, Leeds City Council's executive member for health, added: “We want to help mothers feel confident and comfortable when breastfeeding, wherever they are."

The first social event is to be held today at Pudsey Park, followed by a second at Middleton Park tomorrow. The final event will be at Yeadon Tarn on Friday.

To register attendance email [email protected]. Groups will be kept to under 30 per session, while social distancing will be maintained.
