Put out the flags as region grabs record for bunting

THE world’s longest length of bunting has been created in Yorkshire.

Stretching for 2.3 miles (3.7km) and including 15,196 pieces of material, it was measured at Elland Road before Leeds United’s match against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The bunting, created for a campaign by a mental health body, beat the previous record of 2.1 miles (3.3km) .

Gemma Wharton, communications and engagement manager at Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are absolutely delighted.

“It is a huge achievement for the trust and the community and it was fantastic to see that all the hard work has finally paid off.”

The bunting was created to support the organisation’s What’s Your Goal? initiative, with supporters making pieces of bunting representing their goals.

Chris Butler, chief executive of the trust, said: “Evidence shows that setting goals is good for our wellbeing and by writing it down, we’re much more likely to achieve it.

“The campaign has had a fantastic response from the public.

“Without a doubt we have encouraged more conversations about mental health and wellbeing, which will all help towards fighting the stigma that continues to exist.”
