Researchers gain pounds for study into weight loss

A TEAM of researchers has been awarded £1.5m for a study examining measures which could help adults maintain weight loss in the long term.

Nearly 1,000 people across the country will be involved in the study led by experts from Leeds, Cardiff, Glamorgan and Swansea universities

Sharon Simpson, of Cardiff’s Institute of Primary Care and Public Health, who is leading the study, said evidence suggested individuals put on a third of lost weight within a year.

“We need to find ways to help those who are successful at losing weight to keep that weight off in the longer term so that the individuals can benefit from the health gains associated with the weight loss,” she said.

The study would examine if counselling to bolster motivation for weight loss and access to support groups were useful in keeping the pounds off.
