Scientists probe pill’s role in chemotherapy

A UNIQUE technique which could transform the way cancer patients receive chemotherapy treatment is being investigated by scientists in Yorkshire.

The charity Yorkshire Cancer Research has awarded £185,000 to researchers at Bradford University to test if a drug taken orally could be altered to act as a carrier for anti-cancer treatments.

Scientists will adapt part of the drug’s chemical structure to attach to other established drugs.

Experts say the work could allow drugs taken by injection or drip to be given orally at home or on a brief hospital visit. It could also better target drugs on tumours and overcome mechanisms by which tumours resist chemotherapy, making it more effective and extend and improve patients’ quality of life.
