Trolley saves soreness

Frustrated after searching in vain for a specialist trolley to carry mattresses to tackle bed sores, York Hospital’s portering manager Brenda Swales, decided to design one herself.

Now hospitals up and down the country are ordering the Swales Mattress Trolley that she developed in partnership with Oldham equipment specialists G&J Logistics.

“A recent NHS campaign to prevent patients getting pressure ulcers meant that we were moving more of this equipment between wards requiring two porters at a time to carry the bulky items so that they would not get damaged,” she said. “My task was to order a trolley that could carry mattresses – the only problem was I couldn’t find one. I’m really pleased with the result. Transporting mattresses is a common problem for all hospitals so I’m not surprised that there has been a demand for it. I just can’t wait to find the next thing that needs redesigning.”

York porter Craig Austin said it had made life a lot easier.

“It’s simple to use and can be easily operated by one person so it saves time and manpower,” he added.
