Newby Hall: The Yorkshire stately home that's a regular in TV period dramas

There's a reason why Georgian country house Newby Hall looks familiar.

The ancestral seat of the Compton family, near Ripon, has appeared in seven period films and TV dramas in the past decade - from Peaky Blinders to Victoria.

A glimpse behind the scenes at Newby HallNewby is open to the public in the summer months and is a popular wedding venue - but the Comptons have also established a further income stream for the maintenance of the historic estate by hiring the buildings out to TV crews.

Peaky Blinders

Although set in 1920s Birmingham, BBC gangster drama Peaky Blinders was filmed mostly in Yorkshire - you can see the full list of locations here.

Newby's cellars, billiard room, gardens and statue gallery all appear in the first series, shot in 2012 - the latter room was used to stand in for the Birmingham Museum.


ITV's Victoria - a biopic of Queen Victoria's life - has also used a vast number of Yorkshire locations - this is the full list.

Newby Hall appears in the first series, which aired in 2016 - filming took place in the autumn of 2015. The house was used as a set for Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace, as well as London gentlemen's club Brooks's. The library, statue gallery, tapestry room and gardens all appear on screen.

The ABC Murders

The BBC's adaptation of Agatha Christie's Poirot mystery was shown on TV last Christmas and utilised a range of period buildings in Leeds, Bradford and rural Yorkshire as locations. Newby Hall was one of them.

The Little Stranger

A rear view of Newby was one of several shots of historic properties that appeared in the 2018 gothic horror film, based on a Sarah Waters novel. Newby depicted Hundreds Hall, a fictional Warwickshire manor house with a dark past.

Mansfield Park

Filming took place in 2007 for this ITV adaptation of Jane Austen's novel, which starred Billie Piper.

Charles III

This TV adaptation of a play by Doctor Foster writer Mike Bartlett was shown on the BBC in 2017. It is set in a future Britain when Prince Charles has become king.

Gentleman Jack

Sally Wainwright's latest series, which debuts on the BBC later this month, tells the story of Halifax heiress Anne Lister, who lived at Shibden Hall, a property still open to the public. She pursued romantic relationships with women and ran the family estate and business interests single-handedly.
