Armed Forces Day events may have been cancelled this year - but the Red Arrows were still able to perform a poignant flypast over Yorkshire today.

The display squadron flew over Catterick Garrison, RAF Leeming and Scarborough Castle, where representatives of the three armed services gathered on the ramparts to salute them.

Some Armed Forces Day events were held virtually after the cancellation of physical gatherings due to coronavirus restrictions, including the flag-raising ceremony in Scarborough, which is available to stream online.

The two military bases chosen for the flypast were selected because of the contribution they have made to the efforts to fight coronavirus in recent months. The government's track and trace app was first tested at RAF Leeming and army personnel from Catterick Garrison have been manning public testing centres.
