The Sky Originals production, which stars Colin Firth and Julie Walters, is available to watch today (Friday) in cinemas and on Sky, after its initial release date was pushed back from summer 2019.

Much of the filming took place in the North York Moors, where Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 children's novel is set, and it was confirmed last year that scenes had been shot at Helmsley Walled Garden and nearby Duncombe Park.

Yet Screen Yorkshire, who worked with Sky to source suitable locations, have now revealed that the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the ruins of Fountains Abbey will also appear in the film.

Landscape shots also depict the moors near Rievaulx Terrace and the Roman road near Goathland.

The Secret Garden's producer Rosie Allison also filmed her previous projects The Thirteenth Tale and A Testament of Youth in the area and said she was delighted to return in 2018.

"Yorkshire is the setting for The Secret Garden, and we were so keen to film here. We could not have been more thrilled with our time in God’s own county! We filmed around the North York Moors, including the Duncombe Park estate, Helmsley Walled Garden, Rievaulx moor, the Roman road near Goathland, and the heritage railway. We also spent a memorable day at Fountains Abbey.

"The beauty of the locations is just breathtaking - and we were blessed with 10 days of continuous spring sunshine during our shoot there. This is my third time filming around the North York Moors and I just keep coming back for the glory of the landscapes and the architecture."

The Duncombe family also revealed that the gravel forecourt at their ancestral seat, Duncombe Park, was transformed into a battlefield set.

While managers of Helmsley Walled Garden will hope that featuring in the adaptation will boost visitor numbers when the attraction re-opens next spring, following a difficult season in which they remained closed for several months and were forced to crowdfund to keep the gardens going.

The novel is set in the North York Moors, where the main character Mary Lennox's uncle, Archibald Craven, owns a brooding fictional mansion called Misselthwaite Manor.

Scenes that take place in the secret walled garden - which in the story is locked by Mr Craven after his wife's death in an accident - were shot at Helmsley Walled Garden, a five-acre former kitchen garden beneath the ruins of Helmsley Castle.

The 450-acre Duncombe Park estate and house were used to stand in for the fictional Misselthwaite Manor.

The time span of the film has been moved forward to 1947 for the new adaptation, rather than the Edwardian period in which the novel is set.

The Secret Garden tells the story of orphan Mary Lennox, a 10-year-old whose parents died in a cholera epidemic when the family were living in British India. She is sent to her uncle, and gradually learns about the garden while recovering her health, becoming determined to find her way inside.

Other British gardens where filming took place include Bodnant Garden in Conwy, Wales; Iford Manor, Wiltshire; Harlaxton Manor, Lincolnshire; Puzzlewood, Gloucestershire and Trebah Gardens in Cornwall.

Fountains Abbey also appeared in the 1993 film adaptation of the book starring Dame Maggie Smith, which was also shot at Allerton Castle, near Knaresborough.
