Josh Magennis earns praise from Hull City boss

The 30-year-old is the Tigers’ second highest goalscorer this term having netted 12 times, but has found himself in and out of the starting XI in recent weeks.

His lack of regular game-time has been down to the combination of him struggling with a sore ankle and the form of fellow attackers Mallik Wilks, Keane Lewis-Potter and Gavin Whyte.

But, Magennis, who is most effective as an out-and-out number nine, helped provide more of a focal point for City’s attacks after being brought on at the start of the second half.

“We weren’t at our best. We didn’t get forward quick enough in transition. When we won the ball we didn’t pass the ball forward quick enough to get our front-three up against their back-three,” McCann reflected.

“Magennis made a difference. He got a hold of the ball and it was a good performance.

“We felt that Mallik, Keane and Gavin have been playing well and it was only fair for me to keep the same front three because they’ve been in good form and have scored goals in previous weeks.”

City fell behind on 52 minutes when Nathaniel Ogbeta’s free-kick hit the bar and bounced in off Matt Ingram, but Greg Docherty curled in from just outside the box to level matters 11 minutes later.
