The England captain achieved this milestone – one that will provoke much debate amongst the YCCC faithful over the respective careers of Root and Boycott – in his 99th Test and during another stamina-sapping innings in Sri Lanka.

Root’s latest innings of 186 runs, hot on the heels of a double century, saw him not only surpass Boycott’s career tally of 8,114 Test runs, but Kevin Pietersen and David Gower, on the list of all-time England scorers.

Now fourth overall, there’s a belief – even hope – that Root can, in time, emulate the record 12,472 runs that Sir Alastair Cook scored during a career of relentless consistency. Form and fitness will be key.
