The influential holding midfielder went off with a calf injury during Monday's 2-0 win over Crystal Palace and according to coach Marcelo Bielsa – never one for smoke and mirrors with these things – “There's not a definite position whether he'll play (against Arsenal) or not.”

Phillips has developed into an England international under Bielsa and his importance to the team as the pivot in their 4-1-4-1 is huge. His absences so far this season have been keenly felt.

Jamie Shackleton was the late replacement on Monday but another, perhaps more likely, option would be to push Pascal Struijk from centre-back into Phillips's role, Luke Ayling inside from right-back, and to move Stuart Dallas into full-back.

With Pablo Hernandez expected to miss out again with a minor muscle injury and Rodrgio still sidelined, that could mean only a third Premier League start for Tyler Roberts.
