The secret behind the perfect fake tan lies in the preparation.

“It doesn’t matter what tan you use, even if it’s the most expensive one on the market, it won’t work to its full potential unless your skin is perfectly prepared,” says online tanning company Bronzie co-founder Leanne Leguen.

“Our skin is made up of many layers, but tanning occurs only on the outer layer – the epidermis. The colour change occurs when tan interacts with dead skin cells. And no matter how often we scrub our skin, we will always have dead skin cells. This is why exfoliation is always advised before applying any tanning product – to provide a smoother application and give your tan longevity.”

Exfoliating 24 hours before tanning gives the skin a chance to settle, adds Leanne. Drier areas, like your hands, elbows, knees and feet, need particular attention, as does your back, often neglected. Bronzie, which is backed by entrepreneurs Julian Kynaston and Yorkshire businesswoman Karen Betts, offers a new Back & Body Exfoliating Mitt (£19.95), with a middle section that loops around your back, to ensure a full body scrub. It is also infused with charcoal, to brighten and withdraw impurities out of the skin.

There’s also a Back & Body Tanning Mitt (£17.95), which enable back tanning, and has a protective film inside each mitt to protect hands from tanning products.

Then, step forward complete post-tan protection in the form of the Chelsea Bronzie Jumpsuit (£64.95).Leanne says: “The ankle cuffs and wrists will not mark or smudge. Our asymmetric zip allows you to step into your jumpsuit with ease, and our unique fabric will not absorb tanning products. The velour-lined hood, collar and trims, plus gold zips and toggles, add style. The toggles enable an adjustable waist and a fitted finish. It is comfortable to sleep in, leaves your bedding stain-free and is machine washable.”
