Video: Cinderella with Northern Ballet and Harvey Nichols

Have your say

With Northern Ballet and Harvey Nichols, Stephanie Smith celebrates Christmas and the new production of Cinderella.

There are times when we all feel a little bit like Cinderella – put upon, unappreciated, a martyr to housework and with absolutely nothing to wear but old rags.

In a world in which glamour can be hard to find, the transformative story of Cinderella captures the imagination. Even as grown-ups, there’s still a little part of us that longs to go to the ball looking like a fairytale princess, or prince.

This most inspirational of rags-to-riches fables is being brought to the stage for Christmas by Northern Ballet. Created by David Nixon, the new ballet premieres in Leeds on Tuesday, taking as its setting the colourful tapestry of Imperial Russia, to bring new wonder, with a magician instead of a fairy godmother.

It promises to be a ravishing production, and to celebrate its launch for the festive season, we have teamed up with Northern Ballet, in particular, dancers Maria and Olivia, and with Harvey Nichols Leeds, for a very special fashion shoot, set in the wonderfully decorated surroundings of Rudding Park Hotel, near Harrogate.

As our theme we take a very modern approach to dressing for the ball, or any special occasion that deserves a fairytale transformation. The outfits selected
here reflect the major fashion trends for this winter and beyond, including rich, vibrant blue; glistening embellishment; gleaming white; moody florals, and tux-wearing androgyny.

These are some of the season’s most appealing luxe looks from high-end designers including Philip Armstrong, Alice & Olivia and the fabulous Diane Von Furstenberg – the modern-day fairy godmother, creating wearable, show-stopping gowns. Then there are the shoes, of course (Cinders was very aware of the value of a special pair of shoes), here by designers including Jimmy Choo, Sophia Webster and Casadei.

You won’t want to lose one of those.
