Field and Fawcett will hold their annual tasting on November 11 at The Biltmore in York. Tickets cost £10 and must be bought in advance. Ring 01904 489073 for details.

The House of Townend will hold a series of tastings across the county this month. Tickets are free but must be obtained in advance from Katie Pennock, House of Townend, 01845 522334. They will be in Hull on the 10th, York on the 17th, Northallerton on the 18th and Leeds on the 23rd.

Croft port contest

Now the clocks have gone back and winter is on its way it is time to review that old bottle of port which has been gathering dust. Add it to the next casserole and restock.

To help, we have three mixed selections of port to be won from the House of Croft, each one containing a bottle of Croft Pink, Croft Triple Crown, Croft Indulgence and Quinta da Roeda 1997. Just answer this question: John Croft, born 1732, became the most famous personality of the Croft port house. He spent a lot of time in Yorkshire where he was:

a) Lord Mayor of Leeds

b) High Sheriff of Yorkshire

c) Sheriff of York
