On the grapevine
Rising stars
Last week saw five teams of sommeliers and chefs from restaurants across the North East and Scotland battle it out for a place in the final of Champagne Jacquart's Rising Stars Trophy. To qualify, both sommelier and chef had to be under 35 years old. The winner of our regional heat came from Restaurant Number One at The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. Valiant competition came from The General Tarleton in Ferrensby, Nonna's in Chesterfield, Winteringham Fields in North Lincolnshire and Oulton Hall in Leeds.
Losing its fizz
In the wake of new legislation forbidding the use of the name Prosecco on any wine that does not come from the specific region of Prosecco in northern Italy, wine labelled "Rosecco" has been seized by Italian authorities. A consignment of 14,400 bottles of pink fizz, bearing Marks and Spencer's brand, were deemed to have been labelled with a name rather too close to Prosecco.
