On the grapevine

Are you capable of acting as a judge at the International Wine Challenge? This is the most important wine competition in the UK and, for producers around the world, the one where they want to see their wines recognised.

More than 10,000 wines will be tasted, blind, by panels of judges, over a period of two weeks in April and I have been given permission to allow one person to join my tasting panel as an associate judge for a day.

You will start at 9.30am, work through until lunch and then return for an afternoon of tasting, probably covering dry whites, sparkling, reds and maybe even some dessert wines.

The tasting takes place at The Barbican in London and there is no provision to get you there, nor will accommodation be provided. All that is being offered is the opportunity to spend a day with a judging panel at the world's best wine competition, and a rather good lunch. The date is likely to be April 13, 14 or 15. I will select likely candidates on their tasting experience so far, and if necessary I will hold a blind tasting to finalise the decision. Send me an email, briefly giving me details of your wine tasting experience – perhaps through membership of a wine society, travel to vineyards or WSET qualifications.

If you don't have email, apply by post: Judgement Day, Michael Hickling, Yorkshire Post, Wellington Street, Leeds, LS1 1RF. I need entries in by February 27.
