Pub review: The Minster Inn, York

It’s hard to claim anywhere in York is more tucked-away than anywhere else. It is, after all, a city filled with nooks, crannies and snickelways, each as tucked-away as the last. But tucked-away behind the Museum Gardens on Marygate is the Minster Inn, a fine example of an Edwardian pub that’s been faithfully spruced up and modernised.

It doesn’t feel quite as it would have done a hundred years ago but it does feel how the Edwardians would have decorated a pub now. If that makes sense.

Despite being bang in the middle of the touristy part of town, it seems to be mainly filled with locals. This is probably because the three cosy rooms feel a little pokey and secretive and it’s hard to get to the bar without tripping your way through a dozen chipper regulars.

Food is wonderfully limited to pizzas, topped fries and a few small dishes featuring nachos or chicken wings. The pizza menu is thorough and attractive and the pizzas themselves are superb. They’re also two-for-one on Sundays and 25 per cent cheaper if you order them for takeaway. The choice at the bar is good and there are plenty of board games to keep the kids busy while the food arrives. Be warned, though, that the tables are quite small so it can become a bit of a juggling act.

There is a covered courtyard out back and food is only served from 4pm onwards during the week (all day at weekends), should you wish to visit when it’s a little less hectic.
