Pub Of The Week: The Blacksmith’s Arms, Hook, near Goole

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that this ancient pub, about two miles outside Goole and on the village main street, was probably either the village smithy, or the stables where horses waited to be shod.

Now it is a thriving, friendly place, that has retained a lot of the period features but which is right there in the modern world, serving some excellent food and some good ales – Greene King is always popular here.

The Blacksmith’s appears to be bucking the trend as far as rural pubs go. While others are pulling down the shutters for the last time, the owners here are planning an extension to give much-needed extra bar space. There’s a lot of banquette seating (all newly upholstered and comfortable) and considering the ceilings are quite low there’s a feeling of openness and light.

Children will enjoy the play area, and there are plenty of tables outside for sunny days and the dedicated smokers. If and if you really don’t want to leave there’s also B&B available. Nothing seems to be too much trouble. Their motto seems to be “keep it in the community” and by way of endorsement, the Goole and District Ladies Luncheon Club hold their meetings here. Smiles on the face of the staff are genuine, not the fake “American waiter” ones. The management have only been in charge for two years, but seem to be onto a winning formula.
