Pub of the Week: Brewdog, York

It was a hard battle with the planners, but Brewdog, the most talked about opening in York for some time, finally happened in December 2016. With over 200 pubs already in the city it was never going to get an easy reception.

The Scottish independent Brewdog which can be found in far-flung places around the planet now occupies double-fronted premises at the top of Micklegate just inside the city walls. The interior may not be to everyone’s liking, but I am quite a fan of this no-nonsense approach of pallet wood, and exposed pipes used it the right way. After all, this place is about the craft beers surely?

And craft beers they have in abundance. Their iconic range including the one which started the whole Brewdog thing, Punk IPA and other headliners sits alongside other local and internationals both on tap and bottled. It can be daunting to gawp at a variety of this size and know where to start, though the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful, and there are smaller glasses for tasting. Or, choose a tasting flight of four (£6.25) to investigate the range. For non-beer drinkers, there is a compact but impressive range of wines.

Food is not part of the agenda here but there’s a limited choice of handmade pizzas, which having tried them, are delightful and ideal for soaking up the beer.

Brewdog offers a different approach to your regular pub, and it seems to be working.
