Pub of the week: Fox & Coney, South Cave

IN the 18th century, when South Cave was a bustling market town, the Fox & Coney was at the heart of the community, hosting land auctions on market days and proving a popular stop-off for coaches between Hull and Selby. Right up to the 1980s, the pub was packed to the rafters every night, with punters travelling from nearby villages and further afield to join the fun.

In the past decade or so, however, the pub has been in the doldrums, with trade restricted to the more devoted locals and the occasional walker tempted from the nearby Wolds Way for a swift half.

The past year has seen a huge change, though; new, dynamic management have redeveloped the pub’s higgledy-piggledy back rooms to make better use of space, removed some of the more tired decorative touches, smartened up the dining room and zuzzed-up the menu so that the walkers are tempted to have a bite with their beer.

The upgrade has worked well and the pub is now once again enjoying a brisk trade throughout the day and into the evening. They’ve even been offering cheap bed and board deals for the pub’s guest rooms and finding that people have been booking who only live a few miles away, such is the appeal of an enjoyable night out without the worry of getting home after a few pints.

The Fox & Coney is a handsome, friendly pub with keen staff, well-kept, occasionally-rotated ales and a robust food offering. The menu features ingredients sourced locally and prices that match the quality of the cooking and the (generous) portion sizes. A cosy, friendly, historic boozer on the edge of the Wolds – you can never have too many of them.
