Pub Of The Week: George and Dragon, Mexborough

However, it does have, remarkably, two decent pubs, both on the same thoroughfare, one being The Ferryboat, and the other The George and Dragon. The latter has been cheerfully serving the community since Mexborough was but a village, and long before any steelworks opened (or closed) their doors.

It’s a solid, square building, with a lot of nooks and crannies indoors and a covered and decked seating area outside. The menu boasts that everything on it is home-cooked, and it certainly appears to offer good sound value for money. Nothing ‘top-end’ here, just proper pub grub like your mother used to make and plenty of it.

Likewise the beer, with John Smiths as a staple, but at least two other hand-pulled guest ales, one of which, the other day, was a lovely smooth Doombar.

The George is not a pub in which you could ask for a dry martini with a twist, and then expect that someone will immediately fetch the cocktail shaker, but then, it has no pretensions to any of that in the first place. It’s a smartly-kept, no-nonsense establishment with a good neighbourhood reputation.

There’s a lot of amiable banter going on, even on a quiet(ish) afternoon. The indoor seating is built for comfort, not for effect, and everything is spotlessly clean and fresh.
