Pub of the week: The Last Drop Inn.

There are pubs on every street, square and ginnel within York’s city walls – or so it seems. There is so much talk of the decline of the pub trade in the UK that you would expect the ones in York to be half-empty. However, they are thriving, and it is not just the tourists clamouring at the bar.

Example, the busy Last Drop Inn on Colliergate, The place is dark(ish) as are the mismatched furniture and barrel-topped tables. The walls and ceiling have a yellowish hue reminiscent of when a fug of smoke would have imparted the colour. Here though, I suspect it comes from a tin. There are no games machines or TVs and I hear that kids are not encouraged.

The Last Drop is one of the handfuls of pubs in the city owned by York Brewery. Naturally, its illustrious beers dominate the bar with a few guests lurking alongside; wines are limited. The food offering is also limited, and confined to bangers and mash with any variety coming from the different flavours of the sausages.

Late in the evening when I am more used to drinking cocoa than ale, there is a great buzz at the Last Drop. Customers range from those flashing their proof of age IDs to those clutching their bus passes. One tourist sits surrounded by maps scribbling into a notebook, sipping a pint and looking very much at home. In fact, everyone does. This is definitely a place to linger and enjoy a proper, traditional pub.
