Pub Of The Week: The New Inn, Tholthorpe

It is well acknowledged that most pubs cannot survive on sales of drinks alone. Equally, finding a pub which hasn’t morphed into a restaurant is increasingly problematic.

What a delight then to find one which has settled neatly in the middle of these two opposing forces.

The New Inn at Tholthorpe, near Easingwold, is run by husband and wife team Dionne (front of house) and Cameron (the kitchen). They refurbished two years ago, thus creating a welcoming, cosy bar complete with real fire, and a sizable, faintly more formal restaurant bit at the back.

There are changing guest ales and beers alongside the regular offerings, a more than capable wine list and enough events going on to fill a monthly newsletter.

And then there’s the food offering.

Pub grub comes as doorstep sandwiches, burgers, fishcakes et al. But it is the main menu where Cameron gets to showcase his culinary skills. The food is bolder yet still approachable and so sensibly priced it is no wonder the locals come flooding in.

Fittingly, the New Inn sits at the geographical heart of the picturesque village and given the buzz in the bar, seems also to be at the heart of its community. Which is no surprise as this is a cracking rural boozer which, by the way, manages to serve great food as well.
