Here we are in Arksey, one of Doncaster’s suburbs, and on a cold winter’s day there is a cheery log fire warming the cockles and the locals of The Plough.
There are all sorts of notices telling you about upcoming events, and plenty of pictures on the walls that give you an idea of what this village was all about in past decades. But it is not one of those pubs where you walk in as a stranger, and every head turns to gimlet you with beady hooded eyes.
The ale comes from the Old Mill Brewery at Snaith, and as I was sitting and enjoying my first pint of hand-pulled Blonde Bombshell the landlord-chef actually came over and asked if I was completely sure that it was all right? He’d only just put a new barrel on, and he did not want me to be disappointed. Was I? No way, it was slipping down a treat, and just to make sure that I liked it, I had to have another.
The menu is limited (which means that it is all cooked freshly, in my experience) and the prices are to be wondered at – apparently the Sunday lunches are extremely popular. The lovely and very jolly lady behind the bar has the most infectiously laugh, but the real bonus? Here’s a pub with not one television and music which is non-intrusive.
There are two main bar areas, and a popular function room. Seriously, what is not to like? It’s the sort of local that everyone should have just around the corner – and the good folk of Arksey should be mighty grateful that they have! Only drawback? Check the opening times.
