Pub Of The Week: The Salutation Inn, Doncaster

Oh happy, happy days. Back in the late 60s, a group of eight thirsty lads, all pre-further-education, would meet up at their “let’s start the night right” pub, and each down a pint of their brew of choice, which happened to be a deliciously foaming Double Diamond.

How times have changed. The DD that “worked wonders” has disappeared from the brewing map, we have decimal coinage and a pint costs several 100 per cent more than it used to. But The Sal, the good old Sal, still stands, although it too has changed. And much for the better.

Until fairly recently, the former coaching inn on what was The Great North Road, was divided up into a rabbit warren of small snugs and bars. At the far end of one was an ancient equestrian portrait, caked in centuries of solidified smoke, and you could barely make out where the plaster on the wall ended and where the frame began.

Today, Sue the landlady and her friendly team reign over a modified ground plan, with a snug to the right as you enter, a main large bar area with plenty of standing room, and another wee snug, which has a roaring live fire. For the drinker, there’s always a wide range of excellent real ales, many of them from local Yorkshire breweries. There’s a quiz night, many a beer festival, occasional live music, a compact beer garden area, a good basic range of “pub grub”, and a bus stop right outside. What more could you possibly want?
