Pub Of The Week: Scarbrough Arms, Tickhill

No, you haven’t spotted a spelling mistake, it really is Scarbrough, and not Scarborough, with an added ‘o’.

This little charmer stands not many yards from the famed Tickhill buttercross, and on the road to Bawtry, a little further south. It has John Smiths and Directors as two of the permanent beers, and a wide rotating selection of guest ales; the Smiths is kept beautifully.

It has three bars, one of which is billed as “a gentleman’s club”, which means that it is slightly scruffy, has a pool table and a darts board, and is very much a retreat for the men. The other two bars are spotlessly clean, and both look as if you’d walked off the street and back in time to an era of tankards behind the bar, long low settles and cherries on a stick. Distinctly “olde worlde”.

If you are wanting more than liquid nourishment, then you’re going to be unlucky, because the Scarbrough does not do food. Crisps and nuts, yes, anything more solid, no. But, I was assured, the landlady won’t me giving your knuckles a rap of you ask if you can bring in some of your own sandwiches. There are no children allowed into the snug – and there’s a notice firmly telling you that on the door..

There’s a huge car park, a beer garden area, and the there’s one bus stop yards from the front door on the right and another, ditto, to the left. It’s old-fashioned, friendly, a proper little old small town pub, and something of a wee gem.
