Pub Of The Week: The Snickleway Inn, York

York has some fine pubs. Many are designed to lure the committed beer-head, many unashamedly dedicate themselves to pulling in the tourists and some just sit there being good for the sake of it.

One such pub is the Snickleway Inn on Goodramgate.

The building dates back to the 15th-century and is thought to have been, at one time, a brothel and a powder magazine during the English Civil War. There is little more to it than a double height front bar, a couple of smaller rooms and the self-proclaimed “smallest beer garden in the world” – I don’t know how you go about getting that verified but certainly the small back yard is little bigger than a pool table. There are very welcoming real fires and a decent music playing all day. They also hold regular quizzes and, somewhat randomly, reggae nights.

The food is honest and hearty; doorstep sandwiches are served 12-3pm every day but Sunday and at about £4 are great value. Even better are Ged Beck’s award-winning pork pies, served all day with a pile of pickle they are a treat at £1.85.

Drink-wise the pub offers six well-kept, regularly rotated real ales, four of them from Yorkshire, along with the usual soft drinks and spirits. Speaking of which...for those who believe such hogwash, the Snickleway has been named (by no less an authority than Derek Acorah) one of the 100 scariest places in Britain. It also claims – along with many others in the city – to be York’s most haunted pub. Don’t let this tosh put you off visiting, though.
