Pub Of The Week: The Star and Garter, Kirby Overblow

Indeed, probably many of them do. But how many have the seal of approval from the man himself?

The Star and Garter in Kirby Overblow, a picturesque village lying on the south of Harrogate, has just that. Well, in a fashion.

Simon Theakston, great-great grandson of the brewery’s founder and its current executive director, lives just around the corner, loves frequenting this inviting hostelry, and can often be seen enjoying its convivial atmosphere.

If that is not enough to encourage the ale connoisseurs, then those who are sport lovers – and let’s face it, the two do often go hand in hand – will find themselves similarly star-struck if they get lucky.

Think of the greatest-ever Leeds United team, and one of their finest stars, and you’ll be getting close to the identity of one of their regulars while some of Leeds RL’s most famous sons are also fellow drinkers.

Yet, apart from all these side-stories, the Star and Garter is simply a good, old-fashioned decent boozer which is why it is so popular with locals and visitors alike.

This traditional inn – low beams, dark oak panelling, stone walls and the like – is most renowned for its food, hearty fayre including all the favourites including beer-battered haddock and chips, gammon and eggs plus a famed Sunday roast.

But, thankfully, it has not turned all ‘gastro-pub’ – “I like the drinkers and their tales,” licensee Pauline McAlinden admits.

There is Black Sheep sitting alongside that excellent Theakston, and a decent range of lagers too. The renowned Shoulder Of Mutton is just over the road but The Star and Garter rightly holds its own.
