School chefs cook for crown

FOUR top school chefs will go head to head to win the Yorkshire and Humber regional school chef of year crown 2011 this week.

Organised by the Local Authority Caterers Association, the event takes place at Hull College, on Friday. The four school chefs (‘dinner ladies’) represent City of Bradford, Sheffield, Leeds and North Yorkshire (Whitby). Contestants have to cook a main course and dessert suitable for an 11-year-old, spending no more than £1.35 per child on the meal.

Main course dishes to be prepared include Caribbean Chicken & Mango Kebabs with Mild Chilli Rice and Tomato Dip, and Steamed Ling served with Tomato Sauce, Crushed New Potatoes, Minted Peas, Salad and Sun Dried Tomato Bread.

On the judging panel will be a local professional chef and two 11-year-old pupils from a Hull school, as well as a local authority catering expert and a leading dietitian.

On course to bake bread

The Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School has teamed up with Malton-based bakery, Pattacakes to teach people how to make Yorkshire bread. The bread-making courses will take place in March, April, May and July and will be taught by Anita Tasker, owner of Pattacakes.
