Off the shelf

Here is this week's top pick of good value bottles to savour

Yalumba Y Series Viognier 2009, Australia, Majestic, down from 7.99 to 5.99 on multibuy until January 31: Soft, peachy apricot fruit and a hint of honeysuckle makes this a good wine to team up with chicken, salads and baked fish dishes. It can even stand up to a light, spicy curry.

Rio BB Pinot Noir, Chile, Tesco, down from 6.99 to 5 until November 30: A new wine, available on the Tesco.com/wine site, but also making its way into stores. Rather more depth and complexity than many other Chilean Pinots.

Paxton Shiraz Grenache AAA 2008, Australia, Booths, 9.99: Not on offer, but new on the shelves at Booths and well worth a try for its deep blueberry and raspberry fruit shot through with chocolate and cinnamon. A winter-weight wine to team up with red meat and cheese.

St Gall Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Champagne, Marks & Spencer, down from 26 to 21 until November 28: A serious notch up in quality from the standard M&S champagne, and its Blanc de Blancs style makes it crisper, and cleaner but with a deep, elegant toasty style.
