Firefinch Sauvignon Blanc 2010, South Africa, Tesco, down from £8.99 to £6.49 until November 30: From Springfield Estate, one of the best Sauvignon Blanc producers in the Cape, this is full of zesty pineapple fruit with a streak of gooseberry freshness. Good as an aperitif but better with tempura prawns.

Yali Three Lagoons Carmenre 2008, Chile, Sainsbury down from 9.99 to 7.49 until December 14: A single vineyard Carmenre from a coastal site so the fruit is light, crisp and complex.

A foodie Carmenre from a quality producer.

Barolo Villa Peironte 2005, Italy, Marks and Spencer, down from 22 to 10 until November 28: Ambitiously priced in the first place, this seems to be on sale to clear, but the quality is terrific. Still rather too young, it needs another year or so to shake off its tannins and show its taffeta fruit.

Cava Prestige Brut, Spain, Marks and Spencer down from 7.99 to two bottles for 12: Good quality fizz at a bargain price. It doesn't have that

earthy taste that some Cavas have,

just light nutty complexity and a

creamy finish.
