Here is this week's top pick of good value bottles to savour

Grner Veltliner, Terraces, 2009, Domaine Wachau, Austria, Waitrose down from 7.99 to 5.99 until August 24. The name puts a lot of people off this grape but the taste is terrific with light, white pepper-dusted, citrus and celery flavours. It has weight in the mouth and so is good with all summer foods.

Sancerre Domaine Naudet 2008, France, Waitrose down from 12.49 to 9.99 until August 24. Not just another Sauvignon Blanc but a crunchy, minerally, citrus-charged Sancerre with the real taste of the region. Worth its full price so buy some for now and the next few months.

Fragoso Merlot 2009, Argentina, Marks and Spencer, down from 6.49 to 4.99 until September 5. Soft, lush, blackberry fruit with enough weight and style to pour for a summer dinner party but at this price keep some handy for the weekend barbecue.

Ch. de Pennautier 2008, Cabards, France, Majestic 6.99 down to 5.99 on multibuy Terrific value even at its full price, this wine comes from a fabulous chteau on the outskirts of Carcassonne. Syrah and Merlot and Cabernet give deep, spiced red berry fruit.
