Off the shelf

Here is this week's top pick of good value bottles to savour

Tesco Finest Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc 2009, South Africa, Tesco down from 7.49 to 5.49 until August 10. Old vines and low yields give this Chenin the concentration that many others lack. It is a terrific summer wine with lemon and honey notes spread across a lightly toasted background.

Ara Pathway Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand, Morrisons, down from 7.99 to 5.99 until August 8. Lively, crisp tropical fruit with the scent of a freshly mown lawn makes this the perfect wine to drink in

the garden.

Errazuriz Merlot 2008, Chile, Sainsbury down from 7.99 to 6 until August 10. Bags of lush red berry fruit and soft velvety tannins in this wine. Team it with anything that comes off the barbecue or pour alongside a plate of pasta.

Louis Chaurey NV Champagne, Marks and Spencer down from 30 to 15 until September 5. Challenged at its full price, but a bargain on offer, this comes from M&S's usual supplier, Oudinot. It has rather more rounded brioche notes and length than anything else I have tasted at this price.
