Off the shelf

Here is this week's top pick of good value bottles to savour

Tesco Finest Tapiwey Sauvignon Blanc, 2009, Chile, down from 8.99 to 4.49 until April 21. Bright, zesty, minerally fruit from excellent producer Via Ventisquero. Very challenged at its full price, so stock up and drink it through the summer.

Bellingham Chardonnay with a splash of Viognier 2009, South Africa, Co-op, down from 6.99 to 4.99 until April 13. Fresh citrus and pineapple aromas with round peachy flavours combine to make this a good wine to drink on its own, but it also goes well with cold roast chicken and lightly spiced dishes.

Casa Leona Cabernet Sauvignon 2009, Chile, Marks and Spencer, down from 6.49 to 4.49 until April 5. A ripe, lush, blackberry-stashed wine that is just crying out for a steak or lamb chop to keep it company. Unoaked to let the fruit shine through.

Taittinger Brut, Booths down from 31.99 to 21.99 until April 17. With so many good sparkling wines on the shelves, do we need champagne any more? Yes because those new world sparklers don't have quite the finesse and harmony of good Champagne and Taittinger is very good.
