Off the shelf

Here is this week's top pick of good value bottles to savour

Cycles Gladiator 2008, Pinot Grigio, California, Waitrose down from 7.39 to 5.49 until February 16. This wine has been banned in Alabama because of the label, which is as good a reason as any to buy it, and the wine is good too.

Montana Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2008, New Zealand, Sainsbury, down from 8.95 to 5.99 until February 16. Move up a notch in quality from many of the value Sauvignons around. This reserve comes mainly from the Brancott vineyard and it has streaks of mineral complexity behind the gooseberry and herb flavours.

Villa Moreschi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2008, Italy, Sainsbury, down from 8.99 to 5 until February 9. Only a few more days for this offer to run, and while it is out of its class at full price, it is comfortable at a fiver, its bright, ripe cherry fruit and savoury finish goes well with a mid-week bowl of pasta.

Paradiso Carmenre 2009, Chile, Marks and Spencer, down from 6.99 to 4.99 until February 28. Deep blackberry and chocolate notes in this lush fruity wine from quality producer Luis Felipe Edwards. Soft enough to drink on its own, but great with a steak.
