Hitchhiker gives a big thumbs up for cancer charity with sponsored journey

His aim is to raise money for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal, which funds research and treatment in Leeds. Mr Evans, 27, from Yeadon, near Leeds, was diagnosed with testicular cancer at 19 and last month celebrated five years cancer-free. His charity efforts have included the London Marathon, but this is his most ambitious plan yet.

“I am going to head for Dover and then go into Europe. I will try to go through Belgium, Germany and towards Poland.”

The Lloyds bank worker is already on his way to raising his first £1,000 and he says he will continue fund-raising on his return from his sponsored “thumbing” trip until he hits £50,000.

Two friends, Nicky Leyland and Charlie Marshall, have already generously agreed to sponsor him at 10p a mile and they could end up making substantial payments.

The 10-day hitchhike starts on Monday afternoon when he will be waved off by Leeds Rhinos players.
