The property’s exceptional design, construction and craftsmanship was recognised with a Local Authority Building Control Excellence Award, which is an undoubted selling point, but what drew James Cornell was the location and size of the rooms.

A founder of Leeds-based Lowell, now one of Europe’s biggest credit management companies, he was keen to recruit one of the world’s top behavioural scientists to inform the business.

The key to success was finding a property that would entice the American professor and his young family across the Pond.

“We knew York was the right location. He loved the history of it and he liked St Peter’s School, which was perfect for his children. The property was the sticking point because the rooms in English homes are usually much smaller than those in America. I knew if I could find the right house, I could get him here,” says James.

Finding 46 Hobgate was a “hallelujah” moment. “The room sizes are big and he loved the fact that he could walk into the city centre and to the station, where he could get a train to our head office in Leeds or to London because he wasn’t keen on driving here as he thought the roads were too small,” says James.

Now, after two years of helping Lowell better understand how to engage with those in debt and an enjoyable time living at Hobgate, the professor has completed his mission and moved back to the States.

The property, now for sale, has a double-height reception hall open-plan living space partitioned by a double-sided wood burning stove and a kitchen A spa adjoins the sunroom with bi-folding doors onto the garden. On the first floor are five double en suite bedrooms and a study. There is a sixth bedroom/office on the second floor. Outside is a garden, gated drive, garage and workshop
