It’s hard to believe that this striking, contemporary home in Ilkley started life as a 1970s bungalow. The property, now for sale for £995,000 with Hunters estate agents, owes its renaissance to Janine Heptonstall who spotted the potential to enlarge and modernise the dated house, which sits in a prime spot in sought-after Ilkley.

“I started making mood boards and got architects involved before applying for planning permission. The build took 10 months and the old house is now completely unrecognisable,” says Janine, who bought the property six years ago.

One of the greatest surprises during the radical makeover was discovering that the garden was far bigger than anyone realised. “The previous owner didn’t want a big garden so he had fenced off a section for a lawn and patio. I didn’t realise that the overgrown land behind the fence belonged to me but it did so that was a huge bonus.”

Another was the suite she originally created for her son, Josh. It is self-contained with separate access and has an open plan living space with a bed, seating area and glazed, sliding doors leading out to a private rear patio.

“Josh said it was crying out to be used as Airbnb accommodation so I listed it three years ago and it has been really successful,” says Janine, who is selling to “rightsize”.

“I am ex-cabin crew and so I am used to hospitality and doing Airbnb appealed to me. I could fill it every day of the week because it is a 10 minute walk into the town centre, 10 minutes from the Cow and Calf rocks. It’s also very easy to manage because it has its own access and key safe.”

The main house has an entrance with aluminium front door. The kitchen includes cabinets by Mereway, low level LED lighting and quartz worktops. The open plan dining and sitting area has bifold doors leading out onto the sun terrace. The ground floor also has a cloakroom, sitting room, family room, spotlights.

The light-filled sitting room

On the first floor, there is a master bedroom with Sliderobes wardrobes and an ensuite shower room. There are two further bedrooms and a house bathroom. The lower ground floor is home to the self-contained guest suite and a utility room.

Outside, the property is surrounded by landscaped gardens with a lawn and a patio area, ideal for outdoor dining. To the rear lies parking, a patio, potting shed. There is also a driveway with ample parking.
