This coastal home is a good example of how a property can transform your life for the better.Pat and Dennis Lofthouse saw it advertised in The Yorkshire Post 16 years ago and it prompted a complete lifestyle change for them and their sons. They swapped their house in a village near Leeds for the Georgian gem in Filey and have never regretted the radical decision to buy the former gentleman’s residence.“We had a holiday home in Filey and so we knew this house and had always admired it. Buying it was a case of allowing our hearts to rule our heads because I worked in York and my husband worked in Castleford at the time.“It was quite a commute for Dennis but it was worth it,” says Pat.

Like most Georgian properties this house is full of natural light.

Sitting in a prime location above Filey bay, the house had retained many of its period features and also came with seven acres of land, which made it perfect for the Lofthouse’s horses. However, perfection wasn’t achieved until the property was renovated.“The house was effectively split into two parts so we made it one again. There was quite a lot of work to do, including rewiring, installing central heating, new flooring and decorating but it has been worth it,” says Pat.“This is such a lovely place to live and the quality of light here is fantastic. It has been a wonderful place to bring up children. We are part of a safe community and everything you need is within walking distance.”

She and Dennis are selling to downsize now that their children have grown up.Church Cliff House dates back to 1799 and is adjacent to historic St Oswald’s Church, which according to Pevsner is “‘easily the finest church in the north east corner of the East Riding”.The 5,000 sq.ft house, which sits in seven acres of land, has an entrance hall, four reception rooms, a study, kitchen, breakfast room, laundry room with walk-in pantry and cellars.
