Chris and Alison Hill had to make a snap decision when they bought this farmhouse 10 years ago but they have never regretted it for a moment.

“There were two other people interested in it so we knew we had to put an offer in right away and that’s what we did. It just looked and felt right. It’s one of those places that makes everyone feel comfortable,” says Chris.

Shore Hall Farm, which is full of period charm and has a detached cottage in the grounds, is in the tranquil rural village of Millhouse Green but is close to the popular market town of Penistone. It is now for sale for £1.15m with Simon Blyth estate agents

Parts of it date to 1652 and Chris and Alison have added a sensitive 21st extension designed by Natalie Garside of Holmfirth-based A and DP Architecture and built by Mark Jebson Construction. The space, which is now a large living kitchen, is light-filled thanks to a glazed gable end.

“It was a big and expensive project and we didn’t compromise on the quality. We used York stone for the build to match the original part of the house and we didn’t skimp on the kitchen.” says Chris. “We love sitting in that room.”

The Hills will be sad to leave Shore Hill Farm but are selling to move onto another property project. “We are looking for something with a smaller garden that will suit us when we are older,” says Chris, who adds that he and Alison have enjoyed being part of the Millhouse Green community, where their Kune Kune pigs, Hugo and Boss, have become a star attraction. We have had them for nine years and they are lovely and friendly. They have become a bit of a feature and local children have loved coming by the garden to look at them, especially in lockdown.”

Shore Hall Farm has a hallway to the living kitchen with two Agas. The ground floor also has a utility room, cloakroom, snug and a sitting room. On the first floor, there is a double bedroom with ensuite, two further bedrooms and a house bathroom. The top floor has a home office/library and a fourth bedroom.

Outside there is a driveway, two large parking areas, a double garage and an acre of gardens, grounds and a paddock with a detached barn and stable. The cottage is a two-storey building with a studio on the first floor and garaging beneath but there is potential to convert it back into a home/annexe and planning permission, now lapsed, has been granted.
