This beautiful grade two listed home sits in a sheltered spot on the sunny side of the valley above Hebden Bridge.
The micro-climate and the beautiful, long-range views were a major attraction for Rose Wheeler and her partner when they bought the property eight years ago.
“We loved the house and the location and the face that there are at least half a dozen circular walks from the doorstep here,” says Rose.
They have since transformed both the house and its gardens to make them as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible.
They began by remodelling the interior to showcase the historic features, extending the converted barn section of the property to make a double-height living space with a mezzanine study area and a new en-suite bedroom with French doors onto a patio. They also installed new floors, skirting boards and doors in solid oak .
The house now has 2,290 sq. ft of space, including two reception rooms, a large dining kitchen, master bedroom with en-suite, house bathroom, two further bedrooms and a study/fourth bedroom.
The property was also insulated, the septic tank replaced by a modern biodigester and solar hot water and photo voltaic panels were erected on the hillside behind the house. The panels generate hot water from April to October and the electricity bill is substantially reduced. The system also attracts an annual feed-in tariff payment.
The garden and woodland are set in an acre of land. This includes terraced vegetable plots with dry stone wall frontages, a rockery made from stones dug out during the extension work and a built-in barbecue and orchard, along with six seating areas that are located to make the most of the views. There is also a clever irrigation system with hose-fed taps at every level and a 6,000 litre tank that collects rainwater for use in the summer months.
“It’s a beautiful setting for gardening because at every point you have an incredible view in front of you. We got the idea for the terraced vegetable patches and dry stone walls from an Italian garden we saw,” says Rose, who is downsizing to an apartment in Hebden Bridge.
“I will be sad to leave the house but I am staying in the town because it has such a wonderful, friendly community and there are many great amenities here like the cinema, independent shops, coffee shops and restaurants.”
