This remarkable Georgian property has a spectacular riverside location with long-range rural views yet it’s within easy walking distance of Wetherby town centre.

The owners, who call it the “the secret house” as it’s hidden from the road, bought it in 1991 and have treated it to two makeovers.

“It had been a house with an apartment downstairs and it was in poor condition when we bought it so we refurbished it then and nine years later we brought in an architect and did a major re-fit,” says Sheila Thewlis, who describes it as a “tranquil and very happy house”.

Manchester-based OMI architects came up with a scheme to completely remodel the interiors and add an extension. The result is a strikingly contemporary home that still retains its historic architectural features and makes the most of the waterside setting.

The design is so impressive, it won two RIBA, Royal Institute of British Architects, awards and a Manchester Society of Architects prize.

Judges were particularly impressed with the modern extension, which includes a family room with large areas of retractable glazing that makes the most of the outstanding views. They also commended the tiered sequence of terraces and walls that lead to the water’s edge.
