It’s the bicentenary of Emily Bronte’s birth this year and the Bronte Parsonage Museum in Haworth is paying tribute with an exhibition: Making Thunder Roar. It features Emily’s writing, art and possessions, along with personal responses to her work from well-known fans, including Maxine Peake, Lily Cole, and Helen Oyeyemi.

Emily’s admirers are especially ardent and, along with a pilgrimage to the parsonage, they will no doubt make their way to Top Withens. The remote, ruined farmhouse is said to be the inspiration for the Earnshaw family home, Wuthering Heights, the bricks and mortar star of her famous novel.

The walk from the parsonage to Top Withens takes you past Westfield Lodge, a 2,500 sq ft farmhouse and a mini holiday village with 20 self-catering apartments. It’s now for sale with Blacks Business Brokers offering a live-work opportunity with exceptional views over Bronte country and the moors that inspired the world’s most famous literary sisters.

The south-facing site set in 4.5 acres has a five-star rating on TripAdvisor and is popular with dog owners as it is dog-friendly. It has been a holiday village for more than a decade and is owned by businessman Dennis Pagdin, who bought the farmhouse in 1988.

The owner of a successful construction business, he built the apartments adjacent to his home but he is now 77 and is selling up so he can semi-retire. The holiday lets are run by three members of staff and in the most recent financial year, Westfield Lodge had a turnover of £160,000, generating a gross profit of £110,000.

Mr Pagdin says: “It’s the perfect lifestyle business. Every morning I wake up to fabulous views over the valley. I am in the countryside but just a mile away from Haworth and its fantastic pubs, restaurants and facilities.”

He adds: “The business runs itself at the moment but there is also potential for new owners to expand into camping or glamping and to make further inroads into the market for accommodating organised groups. There is nothing quite like us around here and the fact we are dog-friendly attracts a lot of people.”
