The Telegraph names five Yorkshire villages among its top 40 'lockdown escape' destinations for movers

The list takes into account lockdown-influenced requirements such as local pubs, shops, cycle routes, fast broadband and access to open countryside such as National Parks or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The villages selected are reasonably close to railway stations but less so than past buyers would have demanded, as increased home working becomes more common, while younger workers fleeing the cities are more prepared than past generations to cycle or walk to a station rather than drive.

Crayke, near the Castle Howard estat, is chosen for its location in the Howardian Hills AONB. It's 11 miles from Poppleton Station and offers easy access to York. It has a sports ground with cricket and tennis facilities, and a very highly-regarded pub, The Durham Ox.

Askwith is close to Burley-in-Wharfedale Station, with connections to Leeds and Bradford via Ilkley. It's close to Nidderdale AONB, as are two of the other recommended villages - Birstwith, on the edge of Harrogate, and West Tanfield, near Bedale. Although The Telegraph reports that West Tanfield is five miles from Bedale Station, they neglect to mention that Bedale is on the Wensleydale Railway heritage line, which is run by volunteers and has no mainline services.

The final village featured is Hovingham, near Malton, which is close to the Howardian Hills and has attractive stone cottages, a shop, bakery, pub, cricket and tennis clubs.
