Yorkshire mansion that was home to a Chancellor of the Exchequer goes on sale for £1.5million

A Grade II-listed stately home that was once owned by a Viceroy of India has gone on the market.

Georgian mansion Hickleton Hall, on the outskirts of Doncaster, was a country seat of the Viscounts Halifax, who have played a prominent role in British politics for centuries.

The first viscount served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the 1850s, and his grandson Edward Wood was Viceroy of India in the 1920s and later Foreign Secretary.

The 14-acre estate, which includes impressive grounds, was built in 1745 and there is planning permission in place for a buyer to restore and develop it.

During World War Two, the house was occupied by an army corps following their evacuation from Dunkirk, but it was never the primary residence of the Halifax family, who preferred other estates.

In 1947, they sold the contents of the hall and leased the building to a girls' school. From the 1960s until 2012, it was a Sue Ryder care home, and was offered for sale in 2015, when plans to convert it into apartments fell through. It has now been put on the market again.

The estate is priced at £1.5million and is close to the A1 and a highly-regarded golf club.

It is being sold through agents Fisher German.
